Need info on 85 500SEL

I'm looking at an '85 500SEL with 124k miles. What mechanical issues should I be concerned about? At this juncture in the life of the car what repairs are commonly needed? In general any advice? Seller is asking 5K, for a car in good shape is this a reasonable price?

I would have a mechanic check it out prior to purchase.

I appreciate all information!!

Ask for all the maintenance records. Make sure the timing chain was replaced. If not, it will have to be replaced soon. Electronic gremlins are bound to give you more fits than anything else. Corroded or loose connectors and bad solder joints on circuit boards are a fact of life.

Make sure the defroster vent isn't always on. That would indicate a bad vacuum pod or control valve. Make sure the cabin air stays at the set temperature and doesn't fluctuate wildly

Check if there's any flare during the 2-3 shift.

These old cars make sense if you are somewhat handy. Repairs can end up costing you dearly otherwise.

definitelyask about the chain replacement. My excellent 85 380SE had chain and tensioner, guides replaced at 105K and thank goodness because two pieces of upper chain guides found in oil pan. Other than that you will have the usual things like bulky seat window switches, other minor stuff, especially if you can fix yourself.

Thanks for the input!

The '85 500SEL cars are pretty good ones

Some information generally on the W126 models, here:

See buyers guide at www.mbcoupes.com

And check everywhere for body integrity, rust, and water leaks into the interior and trunk.

For $5k it should be in excellent good condition, and have had the timing chain, tensioner, and guide rails replaced, tires, brakes, and shocks in top shape, and no deferred maintenance, and working Air con, becaue that price is reaching, a little bit, I think.
