400E Aux Cooling Fan Service Bulletin
Does anyone have a copy of a bulletin that was issued for some corroding wires or terminals on the 400E aux cooling fan circuitry? I seem to remember the dealer doing some work on my car's wiring years after the warranty had expired and I think they said that Mercedes would pay for it because of the bulletin. Thanks.

Thanks. Then, I guess I should be asking if there were any recalls on the aux fan system for the 400E, since I doubt my dealer repaired it out of their own benevolence.

A TSB is a bulletin that Benz uses at the dealers when a proplem has come up, they are to check each car of that model only when the car is in their shop for service..if , in the check, they find that problem does exist, they do the recommended TSB free of charge ..the customer may not even know it was done. But there ar
e limitations..... One of the dealer Techs will have more info on it and may post shortly.. You can find those tsb's on google |
Thanks. I'm not having much luck Googling it. Are the TSBs something that MB considers proprietary or confidential?

This is from RECALL bulletin 94-0123..Feb 1994
You can have dealer run VMI (vehicle master inquiry) to make sure that recall has been done. |

The document says:
"In addition to installing a larger heat shield for the preresistor, a new fused wiring harness for the auxiliary fan relay module must also be installed" Does anyone know if they're referring to the 30 amp strip fuse outside the fuse box when they say "fused wiring harness," or should there be a fused wiring harness down by the preresistor? The dealer only has records that go back 5 years, so I either have to bring it in and let them see if they actually did the modification or try to figure out where the "fused wiring harness" would be--presuming the modification was done. |
I do not know the exact mod., but I believe they went a heavier feed wire between the relay and the resistor. If you check the schematic I sent , you will see that wire was/is a smaller gauge than the high speed circuit uses.
I also think they fused that wire . The reason I think so is b/c the E320 version used two relays and they had a fuse for each speed , a 15 for the low and a 30 for the high. Yours just uses a common 30 A for both, so I think that is why the wires burnt/relays failed on the low speed circuit. Just my hypothisis.... |

If the wire was fused between the relay and the preresistor, do you think the fuse would have been in the fuse box, or would it have been an in-line fuse somewhere else? I'll have to take a closer look and try to trace the wire from the preresistor back to the relay, but it disappears into a bundle that runs along the left fender toward the driver--very difficult to trace. Maybe there's a fuse somewhere along the line.
