DIY W210 Cluster removal PLEASE....
 

Could someone PLEASE do a DIY on a cluster removal specifically for a w210 with pics please. Mine won't come out. http://www.benzworld.org/forums/images/smilies/mad.gif Please help. Greatly appreciated.
Where can I buy the cluster removal instrument for cheap? $30+ seems a little too high for these things.

You can buy the dealer tools on eBay. The cluster removal shouldn't be much different than the w124 cluster removal in the DIY articles section above.

The w210 has an electronic speedometer, so you won't have to unscrew the mechanical cable, and you don't risk stretching it.

You'll probably have to put the steering wheel in the lowest position, with the furthest extension (to give you the most room). Then with the removal tools (or home made ones from some coat hanger) - you insert on the left/right sides and pull it out.

My experience is that the tools are cheaper from the dealer than on ebay or elsewhere...they may have to special order them for you but I have bought many special tools from my local dealer and they have always been surprisingly reasonable in price when compared to ebay or others, FYI.

If you look at that article, you'll see that its possible to make your own tools. I did this and was able to pull the cluster on my 124 (it was quite difficult the first time though!)

I just checked and the LIST PRICE for the pair is $10...I paid $8 from my dealer...it's the same set the crooks on ebay sell for $27 because they figure you'll just assume they will be cheaper than your dealer and won't even check, but just have your local parts counter order a set and you will have it in 1-2 days, no shipping costs and for much less cost.

To have the right tool is worth $8 in my opinion...the PN is 140 589 02 33 00. If you want to take the time to make a tool that might or might not work right nobody will stop you...just pointing out that for $8-$10 you can have the cluster out in 30 seconds.

They can be very stubborn the first time out especially, and if you make a tool out of a coat hanger it probably will bend before it pulls the cluster out. The proper tool is harded wire that retains its bend and has a nice handle to grip it...couldn't be easier.

If you get the dimensions right on the coat-hanger hook, it won't bend. But getting the dimensions right without seeing the proper tool could be a bit dicey.

I made a set because I failed to pick up a pair when I needed it, and didn't want to wait to change the bulbs. But the handles on the factory tools will be a whole lot easier on your hands than the loops in my home-made tools.

Or you can remove the panel above the pedals, and push the cluster out from behind.
