92 300CE -eats oil, 50 miles per quart

Hi everyone,
My baby just developed a appetite for motor oil recently. No leaks, just a faint smell of burnt oil occasionally while motoring.
Any advice on where and how to look for the problem is greatly appreciated. :book:

Do a search for valve guides and / or valve seals.

The suggestions here make sense.

Two more questions:

1. How many miles in the engine?

2. Have you recently changed motor oil weight/brand?

3. What kind/weight motor oil do you currently use?

(OK 3 questions. ;))

And I thought, my oil consumption of 1 quart per 1,500 miles is bad but 50 miles per quart? the car must use oil instead of gas? If you don't use any gas then it is a good 200 mpg car, 4x better than a Toyota Prius with the annoyance of more frequent fill-ups ;) :D

Tex, Enrique told me that 1 qt of oil per 2k miles is OK.

What weight oil are you using?

I use 20-50, which is what the manual says to use.

My 300CE uses a little less than 1 qt per 2k miles.

The 300TE with the M103 engine and over 210k on the clock uses less than 1 qt of oil between oil changes (3k to 3.5k miles).

I just had the oil changed a week ago, 3K miles after the last one. According to the bill they at Firestone used Kendall GT1 10W30 full synthetic, I trusted them to have it right, now I need to check the manual.

My manual says 20-50w for the temp range that my 300CE would encounter in California. I would imagine that in your particular situation the temp range (weather) would not be too different from So. Cal.

Try 20-250W and see if oil consumption does not drop for your car.

Yes, Texas does have some colder days than California. So I assume 10W30 is fine, but next time I'll try higher weight, not in winter of course.

You could be using 5w-20 for all I care, one quart per 50 miles means you've got a problem. Get a compression test done on each cylinder right away.

Check your owner's manual first though.

Has your car always had fully synthetic oil?
Look like valve stem oil seal time..

You may be quite right, yesterday I got the car tuned up by David S Poole, also a member here, and he mentioned the same thing, although he added that it is not pressing, so I am going to do it at next service interval.

Change or your valve stem seals soon, or you will soon ruin your catalytic converter also if it is not ruined yet. A good MB mechanic should be able to do this without dismantling the engine, it is not an expensive job at all and your oil consumption will drop significantly after this.

i can't imagine yer car running at all at that rate.
yer sp plugs should be fouled.
are you sure you got that correct?
just not making sense.
