I got an offer to purchase a 94 E420 with a blown head gasket cheap. I am wondering if the Head gasket job is a DIY job. I don't have a engine hoist, so i can only do it with the engine in the hood. on my existing 400E, same motor, i replaced the water pump, radiator, hoses, distributors cap and rotors, fan clutch, R&R the crank pullet. I know little bit on the front of the motor because I removed & install many components off the front of the engine for my 400E. I never did a head gasket job before, so i like to know if this job is over my head.

for your first set of heads an M119 is a tricky beast.. I suggest reading/going through the procedure Carefully before tacking it..

i will read everything i can before i go into the beast. Is this a doable diy job? Are all the fasteners accessible w/o the engine remove?
if things goes well, i can post my progress onto this board. i might finally contriubte something to this board.

It's do-able...however, I'm wagering that yanking M119 heads in a 124 isn't going to be nice and smooth.. As with most jobs like this patience and perseverance can make up for outright knowledge/familiarity.
I'd start w/ the Service CD's, they should give you a pretty good overview on the task @ hand. Jonathan
