Thing On Engine

Sorry I dont have a pic yet, but on my 86 420sel there is a deal at the front of the engine that has VDO written on it and a cable that moves like a throttle linkage. It has broken from its mounting and I was wondering what it is and is it ok if I leave it like that as it dosent seem to be non-functioning.

disconnect from throttle linkage.
