Loud noise behind dashboard/gage panel
 

Hello -

When I purchased my 1986 1903,2.3...I was having fun cruising on the freeway and all of a sudden, a loud shrieking noise was coming behind the dashboard....seems like it was a noise associated maybe with the speeometer cable. When I slowed down, the noise started to slow down as well and after a full stop, the noise disappears. The annoying noise will come up once in awhile and it scares the heck outta you! Would like to fix it so any info to fix this problem will be greatly appreciated....

it is either the speedo cable or the speedo itself.

As mentioned it will be the cable or the speedo drive. I had my speedo repaired two times at considerable cost and the noise always came back especially when starting off in cold weather. Eventually pulled speedo out, put sewing machine oil on the brass pinion where the speedo cable fits in and no more noise -the speedo also does not wobble anymore at slow speed.
