W210 - Minimum Oil Level warning

My new-to-me '98 E300D Turbodiesel had an oil change about ten days ago. Three times since then, while driving extended periods, it has fired off a "Minimum Engine Oil Level" warning, or something to that effect, on the digital dash readout.

I have tested the dipstick a half-dozen times, in differing circumstances -- engine cold, engine hot, engine running, engine off. Every time, the oil level is at or near the maximum level notch on the dipstick. I'm pretty confident I don't need to add oil, given that, and I hear over-filling these things can lead to pretty bad stuff.

So is this a sensor problem? Or does THAT much oil wind up in the engine rather than the pan at speed? Suggestions appreciated!

Cheers, John

I've gotten the same message on my '99.

Went ahead and replaced the sensor in the pan and still get the warning when I'm about 1/2 a quart low.

I just think of it as a "Top-Off" warning now.

Yeah, you don't want to overfill, so never go past the "Max" mark on the dipstick when cold.

Mine used to go off too when was not low. Usually when turning left and oil moved away form sensor to right side of pan.

Replacement sensor resolved issue.

Had the same problem myself.
Replaced the sensor in the oil pan and it worked.

x4, mine comes on at 1/2 quart low. My engine hardly uses any oil, so this is not enough of a problem to make me want to change the sensor.
