Consider these costs if you want a W140/V12.

I have been considering a W140, and a V12, at that, for a while. After researching, these fine sedans and the Diesel cars that MB makes, I decided not to pursue the purchase of one.

The link below, is to an ebay listing of a '92 600SEL. Seems like a fine car in great shape, but look at the costs that the seller lists, of the work and parts, for this car. It scares me and my savings account! A brave soul!

I am in the wrong business!

Things like this
"9/15/05 155k miles. A new alternator and battery Cost$700"

make me think I am in the wrong business!

Well you do have to pay to play.

just bought one myself

That looks like a good deal if you ask me. Yeah, these cars are expensive to fix/maintain. However, if you can service the car yourself like that mechanic did, you could have a fine automobile. I like thoses painted runners BTW. I can't believe he only got one bid. Maybe there was other issues.

No, not you, just a cautionary and I suppose an inartfully expressed warning for would be owners of those cars. Those cars can slim down a wallet really, really, quickly........

truckinik 06-25-2007 09:40 PM

Well, it does have a ridiculous amount of miles on it though..
I'd almost even be skeptic about dropping it into another car anyways, before a complete tear down, visit to a machine shop, and re-install into anything else anyways..

Some of those bills are a bit high.

But whatever you have to pay to play. If you don't want to or can't pay the S600 is not a car for you. They cost what they cost so what?

>>Well you do have to pay to play.<<

And in the case of a V12, pay and pay and pay and pay and pay... :)

One M104 is enough. Why does one need two joined at the crank (AKA M120)? That's just overkill, even for the W140.

Multiples of everything. And no room to stick your fingers through.

Should've just made a 6.0 liter M119 stock. Less weight with the same power per displacement ratio.

This is an extreme example, I know lots of happy S600 owners.

If you don't want the V12 buy an S320, but if money is no object (which should be the case if you are buying a $150k car) the V12 is a wonderfull engine and amazing drive.

I really doubt that someone making $500k a year is going to give two ****s about how hard it is to work on one. You have to remember the S600's target market, they don't pop the hood...
