Have you tried to start it with the shifter in N rather than P?

daltonrj 07-04-2007 03:45 PM

without turning the key you can not shift. i thunk after 212,000 miles the tumblers have wore out.

Try turning the steering wheel right/left as you turn the key..

Arthur, if/after the steering lock disengages doesnt the brake also need to be depressed to get the shifter into N in the event the ign remains dead in P?

Yes Sir..
Gear selection requires Brake application at Stand-still,
Remember those old Audis that uses to take the corner of the Garage OFF ????? :):)

I remember that - the market value of my Audi was decimated - and it was a stick.

I know...some Insurance Co wouldn't even write a policy on them.
Every one came out with the brake/gear selector protection after that..
My buddy smashed into his garage door..that is why I threw that in there ...we goofed on him for years and beers on that one ..

the audi thing was due mostly to the automatic idle valve because it was wired so that it was fully open with no power[1500-1700rpm]all the boys soon got smarter[including mercedes] and wired them to need power to open.
