Not sure I can share much, but check the web to determine what fair market value for that particualr year and model should be.

The 6-cyl engine is the same as what was used in the 99 ML320 (my former ML), and it proved to be pretty reliable. The only issue that came up with the powertrain on mine was the failed MAS. This particular engine has the harmonic balancer issue, which should have been taken care of via recall. (See sticky thread at the top of the Open Discussion page).

I have been reading threads about problems with the film ribbon cables that attach to the digital displays on the gauge cluster...pixels drop off the display or disappear altogether when they fail. One of the members was technical enough to repair the film ribbon cable on his and solve the problem. The display issue is intermittent on mine.

Only had mine for about three years...not long enough to determine failure modes on this model (W108). Had one expensive softtop issue, but you won't have to worry about that.

it's not likely that your friend has a clk 320 1999 AMG. dont believe they
exist....as part of a production run. nonetheless, I'd review all the TSBs
on this model/year as well.

TSB = Technical Service Bulletin. Each one lists a known defect and probable cause. Normally issued when a number of similar failures occur with a particular model.

A TSB alerts the issuee of a problem that is perhaps a common failure with the model, but not widespread enough to warrant a recall.
