1983 380SL Shift Knob & Lever Removal

I have searched both the SL forum and Tech archives, but I am unable to locate instructions on how to removal the factory shift knob & lever on a 1983 380SL. I have a nice Zebrano replacement to install. I have removed the Zebrano console trim piece, as well as the plastic console surrounding the shift lever. But I am still unable to access the locking nut on the chrome shaft (see photos). Any advice from "the Pros"? Thanks!
