Ignition key "squeak"
 
2003 C230K; when the key is inserted, and removed, a brief squeak or buzz. Yesterday, nearly out of gas, the sound was louder and longer. Might it be a fuel pump in the engine comp.? like VW's? It now sounds normal after fill-up. Thanks; my 1st ever post.

the EIS makes a noise when it recognizes the key going in and coming out... is your noise different from that? I don't see how fuel level would affect that.

That sound is the steering wheel lock retracting.
