No 4th gear?

Hey all.

I just bought my first Mercedes, 1985 190d diesel. I'm pretty green when it comes to these cars, so any help would be appreciated. You may have to clarify your responses for me.

Here's the problem. Drives great but when it shifts to high gear I get nothing. No engagement. The engine just spins. It will not shift manully to high either. I have to leave the selector in 3rd gear to keep it from reaching for the final drive gear.

Could it be vacuum related? I had a vacuum problem also, but I think I've fixed it. The previous owner claimed that two problems developed simultaneously. The lose of 4th gear and the fuel shut out failed. I replaced the vacuum supply line and and solved the shut off problem, but the transmission problem persists.

Any advice? I could also use some instruction on finding repair manuals.

Thanks
Troy
