Another ignition switch/tumbler question
 

I am about searched out, and can't seem to grasp this issue.

Does the black cover on the ignition switch need to come out before inserting paper clips, hangar wire, or special tool?

I am having a heck of a time.. paper clips don't seem to be strong enough, not sure if the hangar wire is to "thick", although it is strong.

any thoughts... ? I prefer not taking this to a tech and have him pop it out in seconds..

Approximate length of wires needed...seems like the paint on the hangar is worn off at about 1 3/4 inches or so... i can get the exact measurements

I may try jewelers screwdrivers...not sure about the wire hangar...although it seems to be right on the money with the picture

I have used hanger before, it does work.

Sooner or later, I'm going to have to replace the electrical portion of my ignition switch. Sometime back I purchased the Baum Tool set for this task.

The wire clips they provide are slightly larger than a paper clip(bigger in diameter) and smaller than coat hanger wire. Off the top of my head, I can't think of what's readily available that would match up with such a diameter.

Been living on Zyrtec the last couple of days. Brain is much slower than usual.

well, i realize i am barking up the wrong tree..

i have to replace the "switch" portion. I have had an off an on a/c blower motor that worked if you jiggled the key a bit... then that trick no long worked.

so i don't have to take out the tumbler..

the manual doesn't say how to remove the electrical switch, but after reading some posts it seems like you have to:

1. Turn the key to position 1 (needed to take of electrical connections on back of switch)

2. Remove wired portion of electrical switch.

3. Apparently use mirror and screw driver to remove three screws on switch..

4. Replace switch.

It looks like space is limited back there, so it may be necessary to remove the entire apparatus....

If anyone has an opinion, i am open.

It looks like a lot of work, but is necessary if I want my a/c blower. I have no indication that it's a blower fuse or blower motor brushes.

If this does not turn out to be the problem, the switch was on its way out anyway... for 31 dollars and 100 hours of labor, i will do this first.

Instructions in my 126 CD call for removing the steering wheel.

Some claimed they've done it w/o pulling the steering wheel. I suppose it's possible, but believe it's to hard to do w/o first removing the steering wheel. There's a write-up on doing this for a 190E at:

This should work on 124s and 126s as well. There are 2 torx screws holding the air bag cover on. They are on the backside of the steering wheel. In my case a torx 27 size is used. Some here have reported size 25 and 30. I suppose there may be a different torx screw size used between the different models.

If air bag equipped, remove battery ground strap first and disconnect red SRS plug under passenger side floor.
