SRS lit on steering Air bag installed on E320 1997

I have this 1997 E320 that I had the airbag module and steering wheel airbag replaced. Now the SRS lite is on and I have taken to my mechanic who has the proper computer & figures out the proper codes for it. Yet he says there seems to be no communication. Do I need to check the fuses and/ or there is something else. Please help! thanks:confused:

Your steering wheel air bag has not been installed properly, overtightening the two screws on the back side of the steering wheel will cause the SRS light to come on.

See what happens if you fasten the passenger seatbelt up.

SRS light still on

Nope! fastening the passenger side seatbelts didn't work! the airbag couldn't sit properly on the steering column, so we had to tighten it up as much it could take it. If that is the case, then I might have to change the whole column, because I suspect at the time of airbag deployment the steering column got bent. Visually it is reaaly hard to tell untill you put a good airbag in it. Still need help!!

SRS Light Faulty Bag Installation

The bags in an MB only should be tightened between 6 to 10 nm depending on the model you have. The over tightening of the bag is more than likely your problem.

Before removing and reinstalling the air bag make sure you disconect and insulate your negative battery cable. Then disconect the air bag test conector more than likley located in the passenger foot well area.

This will insure no premature employment! :(

After the bag is removed make sure that the plug on the gas generator is fully seated home it should click.

Reinstall the bag by placing the bag on the steering wheel and tighten the left side to MB Specs.

Then install the right side by turning the screw two full turns and then finish by slightly rasing the bag with your thumb and tighten to MB Specs.

If you do not know the specs then call the dealership parts dept. They should be able to tell you. On my 420 SEL it is 6nm.

Reconnect the air bag test conector and negative battery cable.

Then check for proper installation by turning your wheels with motor running all the way to the left till in full lock and then the same for the right. Your SRS light should not light up or even flicker. You may have to do this a couple of times before getting it right. :D

But before doing all of this you should replace your steering column or just pull the bulb and pray.

Hope This Helps!

The SRS systems stores 'faults' so if it was accidently 'triggered', the you MUST use a scanner to reset the system. Pulling the 'battery' won't do it since it has permanent storage in the SRS module.

Read MENU#25 to see what happens.
