Euro 1985 280SE A/C compressor part number
 

My A/C gave out a few weeks ago. I took it to a local shop and they said I needed a new compressor. We'll for 1200 bucks they will do it and replace the dryer (not needed but recommended). Anyway, I started looking online trying to find a compressor on my own. I was thinking of replacing both and then pay them for the labor for charging and checking. So that's the background.

Does anybody know what the part number is for a 1985 Grey market 280SE. It a M110.989 engine? When I try all the regular parts sites, they don't have a 280 listed. I'm guessing it's because it's not an import.

I did find a number on the back of the compressor - 15224. But when I search for this on the web, it comes back with a 70's model part.

Herm. The compressor is an old York?

If so it will be the same as an 81 or 82 280e us model.

I also have an engine for a us 280 that I bought from a salvage yard in Texas that has some other compressor on it that looks modern. The old york units are really not compatable to modern refrigerants, I understand.

I would try to use r12 if I wanted to keep the York style compressor.

If you like I will go out and see what that one is.

Also there is an adaptor available from (Vintage air?) that allows one to bolt up a modern Japanese compressor (not sanyo but a similar name).

From the paperwork I have, it is a replacement compressor. It was replaced in '03. I just can't seem to match it to a part number where I can find a replacement on the web. At the time, it was converted to 134a.

I never heard of vintage air. Maybe I'll try that route.

Has anybody ever made a conversion to the Japanese compressor on a 280SE - gray market - mid 80's?

The compressor on my 280e spare motor carries a mb part number.
