![]() ![]() I have a 1993 300SL with only 94000 miles. When I start the car, all the lights in the dash light up, including the low oil pressure light (this is normal). After a second or two, the oil pressure goes to 3 (again normal). The problem is, after about 15 minutes of driving, when I come to a STOP with it still in DRIVE, the gauge reads between 0-1. I've checked the oil level, and even had the oil changed, but it's still the same. When I gas it up, the pressure goes back to 3. My assumplion is any reading of ZERO can't be good. Where do I go from here???? Thanks for the input.

It doesn't sound all that bad really. Your owner's manual will tell you what to expect but readings under 1 are not uncommon. If there is a problem it's most likely a bad sensor/sending unit which is relatively inexpensive and easy to replace.

What weight of oil did you use?

Same thing here. I replaced the oil pressure sender and nothing happend. My mechanic just found some bad cables (no related to engine wire harnes but with the same damage) toasted, close to the oil filter. If oil level, and temperature is ok, it is probably a bad sender or an electrical failure.

When you say you replaced the oil pressure sender and "nothing happened", was it fluctuating before, .....
....or was it not working then, AND still not working now?

It was and it is still fluctuating like crazy. From 3 to 0 anytime. Just as you described yours. Sometimes it stays at 3 for a while but then it starts to jump like crazy.
It could be a bad sender. Those are not expensive. If you really had low pressure (oil pump problem or something) the temperature will climb fast and the engine could be in danger. If you temprature is normal and oil level is ok, it is the sender or some electrical problem. My car is in the shop now for a transmission repair (#$%%). When I get it back, I'll take it to a different place to have those wires replaced. Let us know if you find the problem in yours!

That is not at all like his description. His description is of a normally operating pressure gauge with perhaps a low reading at idle.
