Keys problem

The master key in my newly purchased 1990 560SEL does not work in the passenger door or console lock :-(

Can I check the passenger door VIN? I can't find it. Seems odd that both the original door and console have been replaced but I can't see any other way the key won't fit. It's a minor irritant but of course I want the master key to fit everything.

You do not mention whether the key cannot be fully inserted into the locks, or whether when inserted, the key doesn't turn. If the latter, is it possible the Master Key is just too worn to work in those particular locks? I owned an '87 420SEL and the keys were very badly worn.

Another possibility might be that the key you think is the Master is really a Valet Key. To test this, see if the key opens the trunk. I know the keys are physically different, but for the life of me, I cannot remember the difference between Master and Valet keys.

You may want to consider getting a fresh Master Key from your local MB Dealer. Just show them proof of ownership and they can order you a fresh Master Key based upon the factory-installed tumblers.

The key fits into the passenger door and console locks but will not turn.

I know it's the master key because it works in the trunk. The grip is squared as opposed to the oval valet grip.

I didn't consider that the key could be worn down, since it fits 2 of the 4 locks. I'll ask the M-B dealer about it. Thanks for the advice.

I phoned the Mercedes dealer and they think that car was broken into from the passenger side and that the owner replaced the passenger door handle and console from a junk yard.

The dealer said they replace the entire door assembly ($200) to match the keyhole, so I will probably pass on it. Not to mention the cost to replace the console.
