98 e320 window problems

i posted this yesterday, but the thread is locked for some reason. sweet tea was spilled on the center console and the windows are not working. i disassembled the window switch and dried out with a hair dryer. now only the front windows are working. the remote mirrors and rear windows are not working. my question is will the window switch unit need to be replaced or will it dry out over time. i am told that sugar is bad for circuit boards. thanks, hoss260e

On that car the window switch assembly is a COMPUTER that sends signals to other computers to operate the windows. Computers don't like liquids.

Before you replace the switch assembly, go to Radio Shack and get a spray can of their electronics cleaner. I don't remember the name of the product, but it is a cleaner/solvent that works on switchgear and circuits. I have used it successfully on my window controllers in the '98 E320.

Best,

I don't have experience with that exact switch/module you are talking about, however I can tell you that in manufacture, electronics are often washed and dried with water. Of course you would want the module out of the car and disconnected from electricity to do this! I think the problem you have is residual water or residual sugar/residue or both. The spray solvent mentioned can work and has the advantage that it evaporates readily, however has the disadvantage that it is expensive and not great for the environment. So if you can remove the thing and give it a good wash and a THOROUGH dry that might work.

thanks for the advise. i purchased solvent from radio shack and cleaned and dried good. it did not seem to help. i ordered a used window switch (console) and will install later today. i hope this takes care of the problem. thanks again, hoss260e

just thought i would let you know that washing the window switch assembly with the electric component solvent worked afterall. the windows, remote mirrors, etc are all working again. i probably did not get things dried out sufficiently prior to reinstalling the switch assembly. the car baked outside (95 degrees +) and it must have helped to dry out.

many thanks for the responses and help, hoss260e
