1997 W210 E420 Knocking sound on left turn

This is a new problem for my 1997 E420 (123000 miles). I noticed a pretty loud knocking sound when taking a left turn under hard acceleration. You do not notice it on gentler turns and it does not happen on right turns.

Control arm bushings were replaced last year. It does sound like it's coming from the front. If it was a FWD car I would think that it was the CV joints.

Any ideas from the guru's out there?

could it be coming from the top of the shock towers?

Check the wheel lug bolts...

Could be the wheel lug bolts. I have seen them loosen up just enough to allow the wheel to slip on the hub and cause a knocking (thump, thump, thump) that increases/decreases according to speed.

Fix is to jack up the car and pull the lugs and use the wheel centering tool to reset the position and torque the bolts accrding to factory spec.
