1989 300E aux fan

How do I test if the Aux fan is not working or just a relay (if there is one)? Me car is over heating only when I am in traffic and at a stop, but when I am driving the car's temp is normal (around 80 degrees). I noticed that the aux fan does not kick in. I do not hear the click.

Firstly, unless you've lowered the temperature at which the auxiliary fans kick in using this mod they will not come on until 105C. To test the fans note that near your a/c drier, below the iginition coil and closer to the front of the car is a clip holding the electrical connector which feed the fans. Remove the connector from the clip, pull the wires apart and feed the fans with 12V from your battery. If they kick in your fans are okay, if not they've had it. I've had both the fans, and more recently the relay fail on me.
Another way to test it would be to remove the connector from the coolant temperature sensor. This this is the blue one around about cylinder four on the head on the inlet manifold side. Now bridge the connector. The relays are located behind the fuse box, the re are six screws holding the lid down, remove them to gain access to the relays. Now remove relay D (when you remove an identifying letter is conveniently below it) and bridge terminals 30 and 87 with the ignition on, the fans should now kick in.
