Will an engine form a 1991 190E 2.3 fit into a 1988 190E 2.3 ? If so, any issues ?

Thanks,

Chris

Chris,
Don't know about the engine issues, but I believe that
the '88 has pre cats and the '91 does not. Make sure you use the correct cat converter.

The engines are simular, however the 1991 engine has a different exhaust manifold. Internally the engines are very different. Different head, pistons, & the 1991 engine uses an intake manifold pre-heater. By swapping the manifolds the engine should work, but if you live in a "cold" climate area the engine will be sluggish durning warm-up.

Would you consider the 1991 to be a "better" engine ? If I change the maifolds will I also have to replace the cat. convert ?

Thanks,

Chris

In order to keep this car legal (smog) you may be required
to have the cat converter that matches the year engine
that you are putting in. If the car has a '91 manifold
then you would use '91 cat converter and exhaust parts.

From what I read C.A.R.B. is fussy about this. Other states
probably have similar things on their books for emission
equiptment. If a car in Seattle, WA fails emission test
after spending $100 in a repair center then comes back
for emissions and fails. an inspector craws under car to
check out exhaust and emission equiptment.

M.B.Doc --- could you describe more about intake manifold pre-heater? Is it mount on the intake manifold? Can it separate from it? I think that my 1991 190E 2.3 has some problem on that pre-heater. It drains more power on my car. Thanks
