Exhaust Resonator SLK 320

Greetings:
One of the exhaust resonators on my '02 slk 320 has apparently come apart on the inside. It vibrates and rattles noticably between 1200 and 2000 rpm. Can anyone provide an aftermarket source for these resonators? I"m about 100 miles from a dealer and hope to save some time and $$ by having a local shop weld in the new resonator(s).
Also, any experience with simply removing the resonators and replacing them with a section of exhaust pipe. I've read others have done this....I assume the sound would be awful and would likely cause backfire or popping due to the change in backpressure??
Thanks for any help!
Eric
