420 sel rear wheel bearing

how can you tell when a bearing is going ? on a one to ten scale how bad is the rear wheel bearings on an 88 420 sel?

you can tell by turning the car in circles while coasting in a parking lot with the engine off. If you hear a rumble when you turn right but not left it is the right side bearing and vice versa. I have never done them on a MB so I can't help you with the procedure. The CDROM does not have this procedure, but I am sure somebody has done this and can help out.

thanks, i will give the test a try. as far the fix goes, i already picked the engine and tranny out at a 45 degree angle. cant stop now.

Man, that's radical. I would jack up one side then the other and turn the wheel by hand and listen for a rough noise, it should be noticable.
Anything can be repaired; be glad it's not a Caterpillar tractor, they are lots harder. Just get information and advice and take your time.

Yeah jack the car up and grab the wheel. Look for any movement.
