-   -   How to remove coil cover? Needed for Replacing Aux fan Resistor (http://www.peachparts.com/shopforum/showthread.php?t=20050)

Folks,

I need to replace the Aux Fan resistor on my vehicle, as it is bad. Getting to the top screw is no problem, but in order to get to the bottom screw, I need to first remove the one of my Coil Covers (CD recommends this... and now I see why!).

Can someone tell me how a coil cover comes off? I have had no luck.

Thanks!

Willy

There is a plastic pop rivet that holds it together on the area where the wire comes out. Just pry it apart.

Thanks.

I saw that but I was not sure if that was the way.

What happens after I pop the rivet? Will it snap back on?

. . . found your problem

You measured the resistance of the 'resistor' and it was open?

I have two 'coils' and they measured about 0.25 ohms if I remember correctly. These 'coils' sit in porcelain insulators in my car.

Are yours in a sealed 'can'? And what's the resistance value supposed to be?

Jim,

When I say Coil I'm not talking about the resistor, I'm talking about the actual engine coil (and there are 2 in my V8).

My Aux Fan resistor is not sealed. There are 2 screws that hold it onto the vehicle. To get to the bottom screw, you must remove the engine coil cover, otherwise there is no room to work a small wrench or ratchet.

As far as resistance, I did not measure it. One of the 2 screws that sit on the porcelin housing is rusted (top one). When I connect the wires to the resisitor it begins to smoke.

So, now I'm still just wondering.. What happens after I pop the rivet on the coil cover? Will it snap back on?

Thanks!

Thanks for everyone's help.

Removing the coil cover was a snap (Literally). Simply undo the plastic rivit type snap and remove it along with the coil wire.

That was just about all the room I needed to squeeze my hand on and take off the bottom screw from the Aux Fan Resistor housing.

Now that the Aux Fan resistor and the CT Sensor have been replaced, it seems that all is working well!

. . . good news!

Willy,

what's the part number of CT sensor, for my archives?

Sure.

It's 008-542-45-17.
