*** Help! Alternator removal pending... ***

I've got an alternator on an M110.984 ('77 280E) that needs replacement...I rcv'd the BOSCH replacement and I read that the process involves one, if not, two 17mm. wrenches.

However, when I looked under the hood, I noticed that in order to change out the alternator (I also wanted to update and replace the belt too), I have to go through two more belts - the ones that drive the air-pump and the power steering.

Q: What wrenches are needed to slacked the drive belts to those two items enough that I can change out the alternator belt? Is everything belt-driven fastened with 17mm. bolts or are other size wrenches/bolts/fasteners involved?

I'd appreciate a quick response to this query...we're running out of nice "outdoor" weather up here!

Thanks!

Is a '77 280E a W116?

If so, the CD is online at W16.org, look for the library link.

Nope. It's a W123.

Note the designation in my signature...

Dang.

That's at least the second wrong guess tonight!

Anyhow, I was hoping that, since it's a M110, there would still be something useful but I can't even find a reference to the charging system.

I've done this same thing on my 280E and if I remember correctly, you will need a couple of 13mm and a couple of 17mm for all that you are doing. However, I wouldn't attack any job on this car without a complete assortment of tools, sockets & open-ends. You just never know.

yep

if you have specific questions i have a 110 engine sitting in my basement garage and could walk out and scope out what is needed if necessary.

You would owe me big time though. A beer maybe.

Tom, Julian & Michael:

Thanks for the information...I ran into a little "work issue" this afternoon...so now the time ran out for me to work on this...I took her over to a friend's that's got the tools and time...

I'll end up a few bucks lighter in the wallet and he'll get those (plus a few brews to numb the pain of a cracked knuckle or two!).

BTW, I've already picked up the belts that I needed for the project and will have him put those in as well.

Again, thanks for the input guys...and Tom? I'll see if I can get 'cha a few brews anyways...PM me with a shipping address and I'll see if I can get you some brew from the land of Nate! (Eau Claire/Chippewa Falls - Lienenkugel's)

Later!

:D
