I was just wondering what the W stands for in all MB chassis numbers, and why is the 107 chassis, a R. Now I can guess that the R might be for roadster, but what is W for in the coupes and sedans? Also does anyone know the rhyme or reason to MB jumping from W114,W115,W116, then build a W126. They made the W123 to then be replaced by the W124, but where is the W125.

Y.M is right. Once upon a time, I found all the words to all the chassis at another web site.. but will have to search through 50 bookmarks to find it again, then I can give it to y'all. It's a German word that begins with the letters W-A-G-O-N and then some more sylables.. can't remember the literal translation. Now for me, I always wondered why my Jag and MB are referred to as "Saloons".. makes me want to open the swinging doors and have a drink in them :) I also found a site that a British Magazine had rated the "top Saloons of all time" and your 116 Rick was in the top ten.. I believe as #6. Something to be proud of. Don't know why numbers "jump" around.. would like to know.

As far as the "saloons" go, that is a British term for sedans. Whereas convertibles are "drop heads" or cabriolets. I once went to the German VW website and they list sedans as limosines and wagons as tourist. Hence, for MB, all wagons are "T"s.

You may want to chek out the post I just placed about the M.B. nomenclature, named "W?, S", E?, L?, the M.B. alphabet game, more info..."
Maybe that would help to get some answers. A. Rosich S320, 1998 E320T, 1995 |
