I would check the simple stuff first such as fuel pumps, vacuum leaks. Then do the more harder stuff such as testing the electrical components such as the wiring harness and sensors, components of your fuel system. Between that you should be able to find it.

CS,
Have you added any fuel to the cars tank yet, you dont seem to drive it much?
I think something you really need to do is drive that tank empty and then fill up and add a bottle of Techron synthetic fuel system cleaner to the tank and drive it some more. I know you talk about not dirveing much and not getting out and being afraid it will leave you on the raod. Guess what, any one of our cars can leave us on the road. Get it out and drive it, anywhere. Just drive it, for a while. A long while and let it eat that tank of gas. Maybe even put a fuel system cleaner in now and drive it. By the expensive fuel system cleaner too, synthetic is nice, MB likes Techron if you can find it. Get a good drive and put a new tank of gas in and more cleaner with the fuel. Not recommended all that often but this car has sat for a time and it needs the carbon and gum cleaned out of it, WHo knows, the high idle issue may just go away if you have something sticking and it gets cleaned out. It has happened lots of times before...

When I got it had about 1/4 tank
I filled up with the corner Chevron Techron took about 16 gal
I've driven about 60 miles & used about 1/4 tamk

The techron is a fuel cleaner?
Does the gas station sell it?

B\Not sure about those things
though

I do want to get some of those things done before I did serious driving
I'm a chicken & inexperienced highway driver...

Well my birthday is Sunday
So maybe its time
with my vacumn hose repair the new radiator cap, radiator & thermo
Maybe its time to see what she can do?

See CS, Here is the deal...You have nothing to lose...You have AAA and the MB road side service if ANYTHING happens. Also, you have done several things that should make it run better and nothing you have found indicates an iminent failure of any parts. It can happen at any time and there is not real "time" to feel it is ready to drive. Just a "time" to know it is not ready to drive. It is not smoking, it is not making any "bad" noises, and it is not leaking any fluids to speak of. GO for a drive on your Birthday! Stay off the major roads or highway, but drive it! Use up the gas and while you are out, find an Autozone or Advance Auto or even a Wal Mart and go in and brag about the car and then go buy a couple bottles of fuel system cleaner that you add to your fuel tank when you fll it up. It will clean the injectors, the throttle body, the parts you cant see or get to, I know you like the sounds of that, clean...
Techtron is one of my favorites and it is a synthetic addative and Many MB mechs recommend it. It is a good total cleaner. Black bottle with a red white and blue logo near the top. Shaped like a round cylinder with a tapered top that comes to a small point. Not hard to find. If you cant find that brand, just get what looks good and buy something that is not the cheapest , but not the most expensive, I like the mid cost cleaners. $4-8 dollars a piece. Dump it int he tank at teh gas station and then fill the tank at least half full. can put one in without a fill up, but it doesnt mix as well unless you go for a drive afterwards, But that is the main thing I WANT you to go do. The car will thank you, even if you need to call AAA for something silly that might occur, the engine needs to be run for you to know if the things you dont like about it are from old gas and dirty injector system and sitting for 2 years or if it is really something to focus your attention on.
Happy Birthday and have fun. DRIVE!

I guess you're right
Truthfully the car is only half on the equation
the driver is a it intimidated by it but I really want to get it in motion
would be good for us both!

Oooh mission one
Find some of that Techron cleaner
I have has a hard start but got it on 2 or 3 tries

It has mostly fresh gas
I added 16 1/2 gal Chevron Techron when I got it it was at 1/4 tank
so it has basically 6 or so old in it

I don't feel a fast idle would result from dirty things
as that would seem to slow it?

Anyway time to make coffee & take a drive...

Have a great day

Since the fuel system sounds good, I would tend to lean more toward the Idle Speed Control Valve (slide valve) and/or the Idle Speed Control Unit. When mine went bad, the car ran fine at highway speeds, but pull up to a stop sign/light and it would die.

Also, awhle back I was swapping out the control unit just to see if mine was bad. I put a bad one in and revved the engine. After letting up on the accelerator it died immediately.

If you are unaware of the locations, the slide valve is silver and on the front top of the engine. It sets between the distributor and Warm Up Regulator (if you have the latter) and has two wires going into the front of it. The control unit is under the dash and probably behind the glove box liner.

X2 I doubt I could have said it better myself.

The Techron is ALREADY in the Chevron Premium (Supreme) gas that is for sale down the block from you at the station.

It is the only gas I have ever used for almost 70,000 miles of driving in the SEC and in that time I have NEVER had problems with the injectors or drivability. Never, and as I said, I only changed the injectors out at 100,000 miles for reasons of preventative maintenance.

Let's try this another way - "preventative maintenance" on the SEC is actually done by driving these cars, the longer and faster the better!

I tell you, mine sat around a lot this summer, but after a fast trip and back to San Francisco, it never ran better. No issues whatsoever.

I think your car desparately needs some drive time. You should go out with it tomorrow if you can, perhaps to Newport Beach Fashion Island and look around, maybe somewhere nice for lunch.

The rain blasted us a lot here last night, but now things are clean and sunny. Just beautiful. I can't speak to the issue of self confidence too much in driving, but I'd guess the car would be very confidence inspiring once you get comfortable in it. I never found Los Angeles traffic THAT unforgiving. You and the car should make a good team. After awhile you will REALLY like driving it on the highway. For these cars, nothing is better than highway driving. A trip out to Las Vegas or up the Los Angeles crest highway would be great; that car would be great going up the grapevine through Castiac up to Santa Clarita, for instance, to start.

It sounds the car is really roadable at this point. You have done a good job, but do the car a favor by exercising it. Once you get it on the highway and into a groove, you will really like it. Los Angeles is really designed for the car, the entire culture is catered to it
