That happened to me twice as well...
...both times when I mash the pedal, the car goes into ASR, and I back off immediately (i.e. due to an oncoming car when overtaking, etc.)
I was driving too slow (traffic was horrendous) to activate ASR in any shape, way or form. ASR light went on only when the engine died...well, along of course with all the other idiot lights...
