White smoke 560SEL..
1987 560SEL 100,000KM's or so. I checked my engine oil today and after three months or so of use in tropical climate my level was one litre low. I accidentally put one litre of Caltex Delo Gold [detergent oil designed for deisel engine] in it rechecked the level and was fine. I use the Delo Gold usually in another engine not this 560.
Well the problem is today in same use as always it will puff out a rather large amount of white smoke if I rev the engine from idle. the next couple revs no smoke. I let it idle a while and rev again same white smoke. The engine seems to be running smooth and no loss of power and temps stay between 80-85 degrees celcius. Need help???? Is it just the litre of oil I put in or something more serious please please help. Thanks, David |

White smoke usually means water in the combustion chambers. The most common source is a leaking head gasket.

i just did my cylinder head on my 88 300se .. cost me about 450 including gasket set. my cylinder head was pressure tested for cracks and the valves were done too that cost me 290. my gasket set was 140.00 .. all in all pretty easy to do and well worth it .. i have 190k miles on it (luckily only two owners previously and old grandpa and then a school teacher). runs great
and yes i raced this around for about a year and blew my head gasket .. white smoke out exaust.. best bet is to repair it asap instead of risking any damage to other parts .. mine was so bad i had water running out of my exhaust. try and listen for air leak (sounds like a car on the jetsons cartoon) keep an eye both on your temps and water level. also checking your oil regularly |
