16 valve starting troubles
 

My 86 190e 16 valve has been sitting for a few months now. I went to try and start it and it wont stay running. Starter turns and engine will turn over but after like 15 to 20 seconds, it stalls and just cranks afterward. I had it towed to my mbenz mech and he says when it stalls, there is no spark. If I let it sit a few min, it just does same thing turn over and die in 15 sec.

Can anyone give me a starting point before I start replacing parts. I was leaning on a coil but I checked the resistance on the terminals and they are within spec.
I am also leaning on a simple fuel filter replacement.

Will a car with a clogged fuel filter cause this type of behavior? The last time I drove the car, it hesitated for the first 15 minutes then cleared up. After that it ran normally.

Likely not the fuel filter, I would begin to suspect the coil, it can still be bad with a good resistance check, its the load and the temp that hurt it, and maybe check the ignition module, I hope it is not the module, they are way hard to get and expensive. If it is losing the spark after start up, it must be the ingition system some where I would think. Ask MBDOC, he is a wizard with MB troubleshooting

Does it have a ignition relay?

yes it does and it could be a culprit also. Coil, module, relay, ECU computer etc

Can you tell me the location of the coil relay and what the relay looks like?

Its not a coil relay, it is an ignition relay, look at the diagram / text on the cover of your fuse box, it is in the back portion of the fuse box. It is a black rectangular box.

Is it the Combination relay for turn signals, heatable rear window and wiper? I think the Benz manual calls it R1 relay.

There is no reference to an ignition relay on the fuse diagram of the fuse box
