'87 300E, 137K - no fourth gear

First off - how can i change my member name to include the model/year/mileage of my car?

My transmission shifts up at what seems to be high rpms and won't go into 4th - at a constant 60 mph its doing 2750 rpm. I don't drive hard, and accelerate gently so its not a heavy footed operator issue. Also, when i take my foot off the accelerator, the transmission seems to slow the car more than i would expect. The transmission was replaced/rebuilt by the previous owner in the last 40k miles.

I've read some recent threads about turning the modulator on the side of the transmission to make shifting smoother but could doing that also correct my problems? If so, where is the modulator, how do I adjust it and which way should I turn it?

...just trying out my new signature!

Well not really, no-one has commented on my problem but i read on here this morning that some MB transmissions actually start in 2nd gear. That would explain why i can only count 2 upshifts from standstill but I still can't believe the engine is suppose to rev this high at highway speeds. Anyone got any suggestions...please?

normal

Indeed the engine revs quite high at highway speed. My wagon is even worse due a different differential gear ratio. I guess the 5 speed transmission of the later model years is a useful upgrade.
However I feel engine noise is not an issue really, wind noise is louder at that speed.

Yes that RPM is normal for that type of car.. MB didn't change that until 1990's

You can start the car out manually in first gear by shifting the car into (2) when stopped. To go threw the gears once you have started out in (2) shift the car up into (3) for just a second then back down to (2) and it will shift to second gear. Then up to (3), then (D) and you will be able to count all 4 gears.

Your RPM is the same as my 88 300E at 60MPH.

Wow - what were they thinking? My daughter's 4-cyl Kia revs lower than that and so does my Blazer - at 75 mph its only turning 2000 rpm!
