1997 S-500 Center Consol Removal

The mirror switch has sunken into the wood on my 1997 S-500 - how do you get to the underside to push it back? The wood is all one piece...

THANKS!

On my (two piece) car, you need to remove the ashtray and then there's two screws that once removed, allows you to lift out the center console piece. See MENU#23 for pics.

Check for screws when the ashtray is removed. . . if not, remove the radio and see if there's a few hidden screws there . . .

Can't just remove the ashtray - I am clearly missing something here.
It looks like you have to go through the armrest and the ashtray?

The single piece console wood is different. The key to removal is the radio & A/C controller.

Once they are removed the wood will pivot at the upper console area.
Send me a PM or e-mail & I will send you a file on that.

According to AllData, there's a catch under the wood by the armrest that you need to snag with a loop of wire or similar tool, reaching under the wood piece from the front.

You need to remove the A/C and climate control units (special DIN removal tool -get at MB or car stereo shop). Remove the ash tray cover (need right angle philips screwdriver). There are two pairs of screws to remove that then are accessible from the ashtray hole and the radio hole. Remove the rim around the shifter (just pulls straight up). At the rear of the shifter underneath the wood is a spring loaded clip that you need a pick tool (maybe can be made with a coat hanger) to pull -pull the clip forward while simultaneously inserting a wedge between the rear edge of the wood and the console itself. This will cause the rear of the wood to unclip, and you can then pivot the rear of the wood cover upwards. There are two clips at the top of the console wood that can be released by pulling the wood downwards (once the rear is detached as described). Hard to explain without pics, hope this helps.

good luck
