Gas line/tank access

Lying under my 94sl320 I can see that what appears to be the return line hose has come off the male from the gas tank. Seemingly reach up and push back on.

However there is a rubber grommet/prophylactic pushing hard against me and reaching past the axel you can barely touch the hose.

No leverage possible. Do I really need to take down axel to get to this simple repair?? Ive tried and tried and tried to just reach up and push but no luck. I even removed the stabilizer/sway bar.

Is there like a secret door or an encantation which makes it go back on?

no one??

Surely some of our resident mb mechanics have some experience with this. Anyone? help?

Do i need special tools to remove back axel?

from trunk

Someone on another forum suggested access to bottom of gas tank may be thru trunk. Anyone hear of this?

well spoke to a mb mech and he didnt think there was an access panel offhand. hes searching my vin.

so axel it is. it is the 50 mm right?

took apart the trunk to just before removing gas tank panel. from the looks of it there is no access panel on this end.

other possible option is behind the drivers side seat or under amp/stereo brain behind drivers seat.

Instead of digging for what may be nothing. just going to do drive shaft removal to gain access.

Unless someone says otherwise between now and tomorrow around 10.

Still looking for assistance on this issue.Anyone ever installed a gas tank on an sl320? Help would very much be appreciated.

Well I got a confirmation on yahoo answers. Two people had similar problem and both said axel has to go.

new problem - inner bolts on axel have previous strip markings.

so im gona remove the wheel end.

Working on getting hub off.

In case anyone else has this problem.

I may remove gas tank and reattach lines while tank is out and then feed them in from top if removing axel wheel side only does not allow for enough access,
