450 starter 420 car

seems the starter in my daughters 420 is actually from a 450
it has been working for more than a year when it stuck an hour from my house
pulled the starter off and there it was a starter from a 450
so my qeustion is should i leave the starter in and shim the bolts so it will not jam? it was wedge in there in the first place
i know it worked but are these two starters dramatically differant in anyway where even if its put in right it will jam up?
i know the right thing to do is buy a starter but she's a college student and the budgets tight
thanks

boy, i to be an a-hole...but if it was my daughter, i would invest in a new starter...heck if it was my son, i would invest in a new starter... of course he would pull it and put the new one on.

I am sure she drives the car because you thought of her safety...think of that now.

I am sure a shop in town could re-build it...

You're talking about the m116 and m117 that MB made from ~1970 to ~1991. Many parts are direct swap. Starters being among them. I am 99% sure the ring gear, mounting and bellhousing can accept an SR-59X or an SR-459X.

If the starter got "jammed" somehow I'd suspect a bad starter, if you know how to rebuild it and have the tools, go for it and don't worry about putting it back on. The starter on my 4.5 is actually from a 420 so the opposite swap works no problem!
