Newbie - W124 220E (M111) - Engine cuts...

Hello,

This is my first post here. Although I've been lurking around as a Guest for some time, I decided to register and pose a question that I've not been able to see answered.

I've searched this forum for this problem but I couldnt find anything consistent that related to this situation.

OK; Background: 1993 W124 220E Sportline, auto, 177.000kms.

Sometimes (most of them after starting the car) I cannot maintain any RPM above idle because the engine completly CUTS momentary (just like turning the ignition off).
What happens when you step on the accelerator to, say, 2000 rpms is that the engine starts climbing the rpms and suddenly cuts, bringing the rpm down to idle speed. After reaching idle speed, it starts climbing again to the 2000 rpms...

It stays at this behaviour as long as you're keeping the foot on the accelerator.

On the other hand, the car pulls strong (absolutly NO problems here) when stepping hard on the gas pedal... The real problem is when you want to maintain speed/RPM (even at 120km/h)...


After driving about 5 minutes on slow speeds, the engine stops choking. But if you ocasionally step hard on the gas for an overtake, when trying to maintain speed again the engine starts cutting again.


Ufff... I hope I could explain it properly.

Now, my guts say its the electronic control (or something) on the Throttle Body. I havent checked how clean/dirty it is (will check on next weekend) but if the problem was dirt, it wouldnt go away as it goes sometimes

SO, I found a used throttle body on ebay for cheap and bought it. It was very dirt inside but I cleaned it and now it looks like new. The part number is the proper one for this M111.

I've also learned through this great forum that if you replace the throttle body, you also have to reset the HFM control module. But I dont have any software / hardware to do so... Would the ledtool be up for this job? I dont think I have a 38 pin connector... only the 16 pin...


What do you think of all the symptoms I've described? Should I check something else before attacking the Throttle Body job?
