1990 4matic whine warning?

I looked at a 1990 300TE 4matic with 165k miles thats for sale cheap, but maybe not cheap enough. Runs fine, but there is a slight whine thats probably coming from the front drivetrain. Should I take this as a early warning for the 4matic needing rebuilding? Is it the front differential that usually goes bad on the early 4matics? I surprisingly couldn't find much depth on this site for what actually goes bad

UNLESS you live where the snow & ice is bad....the best way to deal with a problematic 4-matic system is REMOVE it. Installing a used trans & driveshaft from a regular 300E is the easiest way to elimate that system.

Our 91 4Matic has whined for years. We're approaching 200k miles now.

I'm just speaking to the whine. Without hearing it, you could still have a different whine that might indicate another problem.

There are some of us that have learned to live with this generation of 4Matics by turning them off in the summer to prolong the life of the transfer case. Nothing else beats it in the snow. It has the same transmission as the G-Wagen and lower center of gravity. I can't get my wife out of it even after buying her a new car. So we mainly use the 4Matic as our winter car now.
