Hi guys,

I've been trying to hunt the noise and vibration my 92 500sel w140 has.
On either N or D as rpms go up there is a noise and vibration throughut the car. It is most noticeable on cold engine and at 2000rpm and you can see the steering wheel vibrate and move about 1/8" You do not hear it outside. It is most noticeable inside the car. Transmission whines on either idle or driving. It sounds close to exhaust noise. I swapped complete exhaust system with cats and noise is still there. Changed motor mounts and tranny mount, noise is still there. New timing chain, tensioner, guides, timing checkes twice all mark line up. Mechanic says there is no exhaust leak. He says that its transmission that makes that noise and vibration. Noise has been present for 2 years (I drove around 20kmls) and I assume that if transmission has something bent inside or something out of round it would explode into pieces by now. When I put new engine mounts noise and vibrations is not that bad but still present. When the car heats up to 80 degrees it gets quieter but still drives me nuts. You cant talk to passenger after a cold start. Its that loud.
Questions: Can engine make noises and vibrations if it's worn out and very high mileage? Odo reads 175kmls and I've seen Benzes with 350kmls and they had no noise or vibrations.
Can tranny make the noise close to exhaust noise
Can ignition coil cause that? (Engine idles and revs fine)
What are my steps to attempt to locate the noise?
Any hints?
