Ticking Noise Right Hand Valve Cover 560 Sel
I Recently Replaced The Chain, Guides, Tensioner, (mb Tensioner) Cam Oiler Fittings. Cams Line Up At Marks On Cam Towers With Crank At Zero. Had Over 10 Deg Stretch Now Have 1 Deg Or Maybe 2 Deg. Engine Starts, runs And Idles Perfectly. The Problem Is On A Cold Start There Is Noise Or Rattle From Right Valve Train. I Removed Valve Cover Could Not Any Loose Or Damaged Rockers Or Ball Studs. This Noise Only Lasts For About 1 Minute.after A Perceptable Click, Noise Instantly Is Gone. On A Hot Start No Noise Is There. Could It Be A Lifter Drained Down That Would Take A Full Minute To Pump Up? This Noise Was The Reason For The Timing Chain Replacement Work. I Searched The Posts For Ball Stud And Rocker. There Are Many But Nothing Like This. I Hope The Forum Brain Trust Can Help Me. Thanks Topgun

when you took off the cam sprockets to put in new rails ,did you flip the large washer under the sprocket bolt head before retightening?if not then sprocket will rock against the keyway and make noise like a chain.

It is entirely possible that you are having some sort of oil distribution problem. By design, the right bank of the engine is' last to get oil. Combine that with a weak oil pump, or perhaps some obstruction in the oil journals somewhere, and you get a "clatta" as a result.
It sounds like a "Ticking"-"Clatta" whatever? And you say it's coming from the right valve cover....? Sounds like oil delivery to me... Trucky

Me too. What weight of oil are you using?
How healthy is the camshaft on that side? Are you using a Mann filter (with the check valve) or an after-market Mr. Lube filter?

Ticking Noise Right Side Cyl Bank
I Replaced The Bolt And Related Washers Back On Exactly As They Came Off. If I Recall Correctly There Is A Washer That Was Keyed To Match The Key On The Cam Shaft. Then There Was A Flat Friction Style Washer Between The Bolt And The Cam Sprocket. The Bolt Was Torqued To Factory Spec With Recently Calibrated Torque Wrench. The Engine Has 10w40 Valvoline In It.the Filter Came From The Mercedes Dealer I Don't Recall The Brand. The Engine Interior Is Perfectly Clean There Is Absolutely No Dirt Or Sludge Anyplace. The Car Has 100k Miles With 3000 To 4000 Mile Oil Change Intervals. At Idle The Pressure Gauge Reads 1 To 1 1/2 Bars. At Speed It Shows 3 Bars. On A Cold Start It Shows 2 1/2 To 3 Bars Until It Warms Up. Mann Filter Was Mentioned. What Brand And Weight Oil Would You Guys Use. The Valvoline Has Never Been My Favorite. Thanks Topgun

Topgun:
You mention that your noise suddenly disappears after a "perceptible click" one minute after start-up. This makes me think about your smog pump - down there on the right-hand side - for it switches off one minute after a cold start and can be quite rowdy. It would be interesting to see (or should I say 'hear'?) what would happen if you temporarily disabled the pump by unplugging its connection (in the right fender area behind the headlight). David: I've replaced two timing chains, including cam gears, this year. In both cases I simply replaced the retaining washer and bolt as they had come off. I am intrigued by your comments above that this can cause the cam gear to rock against the key way. The new cam gears were an extremely tight fit on the end of the camshaft, needing some gentle encouragement with a rubber mallet. Once torqued to 100Nm I don't see how they could move in anything other than the intended rotary direction along with the camshaft. How often have you seen problems of this nature? I really don't want to have to go back in there...! |

Did you remove the rockers (cam followers) when you changed the parts?
Did you put them back exactly where you found them? The parts wear together and it doesn't take much of a height difference to make noise upon start-up. Mine makes a little ticking for a few moments if started after several days but I attribute this to camshaft wear.

It sounds like the hydraulic lash adjuster to me. I found in my 500sec if I used 15w40 one would tic until the engine was very very warm. After 1500 miles on an oil change this would go away. I switched to 10w30 mobil one and never had the probelm again.
I bet if you switch to that oil your tick will go away. Tom W

when you take the bolts out of the camshafts to remove sprockets you need to flip the washers.if you take one off and look at the washer it is dished[concave] if the pressure on the washer is only in the centre it does nothing to hold the sprocket tight to the camshaft.ask me how i know this ha ha ha.

Amsoiler
Amsoil recently came out with a prelube device called an "Amsoiler". the "Amsoiler" precharges the engine to normal oil pressure PRIOR to ignition. thus, mechanical components are well lubed BEFORE you turn the key. I haven't installed one in mine.....but me's thinkin' bout it. BTW, this is similar to disconnecting the ignition and turning the engine over to circulate oil after a new oil change.

It really does not bother me, but out of curiousity do you hit the shift on every word to capitalize the first letter or is there a setting that will make it do that automatically?
tom W As you can see I have trouble remembering to hit the cap key consistantly even where convention calls for it.

It's a rocker. I had the same type of ticking noise in my SEC. When they did the timing chain and rails, they found 3 bad rockers. After they were replaced, all was good .

Ticking Noise Right Side Valvecover
I found the trouble. It was the smog pump. I disconnected the wiring to pump. The noise was gone on a cold startup. I plugged it back in before the 1 minute time and it is back. What could be the problem with the smog pump? I am very pleased to find the trouble is not in the valve train. Special thanks to all of you that responded to my need for help, especially RF126. Do i need to start a new post for help with the smog pump? Thanks Topgun.
