CEL reader for dummies

I've read some of the threads on making the LED trouble code reader, but I'm still a little lost. I haven't seen any posts directly regarding reading codes on a 1992 190E 2.6. My car doesn't even have a check engine light, but I do have 2 "ports". I have a round one over the driver side front wheel well and I have a square one in the battery compartment. Which do I use? I've seen two diagrams for the diy code reader. Which is the latest one? Is there a guide to using this code reader for my particular car? The only real issue I have is lack of power (compression test shows good compression). I got this car recently and I just want to make sure everything is working as it should. Thanks so much for your help! :)

Does the code reader plug into both of these ports in my '92 190E 2.6?

It's the 16 pin connector. More info here:

Where do I get one?

Are those readers expensive? Where would I get one?

Thanks -- Greg

You build one for about twenty bucks with parts from Radio Shack. I built one a couple of months ago. A search of this forum will bring up the info you need.

Do these home-made code readers act as just a display for information from the car's computer? I'm guessing that's the case since it doesn't sound as though they contain any sort of software of their own.

The tool is nothing more than a .99cent LED that is Used to Initiate the cars Diagnostic Module, which then sends a code back to the LED in a Flash Format.

It is nothing more than an extension to the Built-IN LED/SW that some chassis have from the Factory as Stand Equipment.[ mostly Cal emmissions versions]
Which socket you hook the led to determines which Module in the cars Control Systems your are addressing.
This is OBD1, [ analog]..and does not work on ANY OBD2 cars...[ digital]
It is that simple...

Here is a diag. to make one ..or you can even go get one on ebay that a member here sells them at .. [ but for about $50..]

Make one ,,they are a nice tool box addition and they come in handy b/c you can also get to all the chassis code storing modules, ..along with finding the cause of many problems..saves that dreaded Dealer Trip we all like.
"Dealer Trip/Dentist/Trip"..both feared to the same degree, but the Dentist is usually cheaper $$$$$$$$$$$....

That CS1000 manual is extremely valuable. Thanks!
