W126 trans shift

My 1990 300SE trans engages with a more than noticeable kick, that is from park into 2nd and the same for reverse. Regular shifting while driving is smooth. Is this a characteristic of this trans? I bought it with 120K on it and never had one with a brand new trans on it so have no baseline to compare with.
Thanks

Kick or Klunk? I know noises are hard to describe but two things come to mind. 1 is your idle speed correct? and 2. Have you looked at your flex disks?

if your idle speed is above 700rpm it will clunk into gear as you described.
