124 suspension knocking/clicking
My 90 300E 4matic with 66,000 miles is making knocking noises from the front and some clicking in the back. I replaced the front struts and strut mounts as well as the front sway bar bushings, and in the back replaced the rear shocks and rear sway bar bushings. However, the knocking (front) and clicking (rear) are still there going over irregular rough road surfaces. No noise over speed bumps, though. There is no play in the front wheels (ball joints) and visual inspection of the motor mounts looks fine. In rear there is no visble wear in the 5 link suspension.
Any thoughts on possible causes? Last edited by torkydzl; 12-31-2007 at 11:12 AM. |

Two additional points. Front noise is coming from driver's side only. About 15K miles ago the left front axle shaft was replaced which required the ball joint to be loosened for installation.

Have you checked Wheel bearings?
And from the above post, it's a little vague....so have the ball joints been replaced, or simply loosened/adjusted?

The ball joint was just loosened, not replaced.
How do you check for a bad wheel bearing? The clicking is intermittent. |
