I've got to replace the threaded rod, belt tensioner adjuster on my 1993 300SE. Does anyone know what this requires? What has to come off to get to the rod? Also does anyone know how to remove the Pulleys without an impact wrench? I tried to get the power steering pulley off in order make some room but I just kept spinning it.
Anyone know where to find the Rod? I looked in the parts bin but only found the tensioner pulley w/o the rod. |

you need a strap wrench to get the pulleys off.... it's made of rubber and wraps around the pulley.
to get to the tensioner...fan has to come off...then that pulley..then power steering...then a third puller.... on tensioner. you might want to do a search on water pump replacement.... to get the water pump off... the last step is removing the tensioner... this should help you to start rod is available through all our conventional parts suppliers or ebay..

Cliff, loosen all the pulley bolts with the belt still in place. If need be press on the belt so the pulleys don't turn while you're loosening the bolts. You'll likely need to remove the water pump pulley to gain access, but not the water pump itself.

I've found the rod for a 300E but not the 300SE. Does anyone know if it's the same part?

I'm still having trouble finding a replacement rod. Can anyone confirm for me that this one will work?
Also, upon removing the tensioner pulley I found a small shock absorber/dampener dangling loose right next to it. What purpose does this little thing serve? I'm guessing it has not been attached since I've owned the vehicle because the bolt to attach it to the tensioner pulley is missing. |

Alright.... I'm getting confused.
I got the new threaded rod in today and put everything back together. The problem is I cant get the tensioner to tighten. I'm able to move the pulley up and down by hand. Does this mean the pulley itself is shot? Also on a another note, how does the threaded rod work? I've noticed that its reverse threaded. Should I be drawing the rod up, or forcing it downward to tighten it the pulley? I've got a 1991 300E with basically the same set up, and I still can't figure this out. I didn't bother hooking the tension dampener back up. Does anyone know what purpose that thin serves? It was just hanging loose when I first took everything apart. Cliff, the tensioner is probably shot and needs to be replaced. If you failed to loosen the center bolt of the tensioner before turning the adjuster nut/rod you inadvertently trashed the tensioner. Take note that the adjuster rod can be installed in the correct orientation or 180 degrees opposite ... check the orientation on your 300E. Also, when reassembling the tensioner mechanism be sure the pointer is positioned properly. Leave the center bolt loose a half-a-turn and turn the adjuster nut clockwise until the pointer moves to the tightened position. Then tighten the center bolt. The tensioner shock absorber dampens shocks to the drivebelt tensioner resulting from sudden changes in the engine RPM's ... sudden downshifts/upshifts of the transmission, A/C compressor switching on, etc.

So I'm guessing that not having the dampener hooked up probably causes quite a bit of undue stress on the tensioner.
How do you know if the pointer is installed correctly? That little thing just seems to fall off every time i try to get the tensioner in position? |

i don't understand the need for the pointer....
just tighten the belt until there is a little bit of play... maybe able to push it down a quarter to a half inch... check another car to see the play in the belt..and do the same

Lee,, the pointer shows if the tensioner is adjusted properly ... too tight and the accessory bearings are subject to premature wear/failure.
