A/C belt. Is this the right way?

Last night I decided to put the belt on the A/C compressor back on my 420sel. I replaced the water pump recently and cut all the belts off so I wasnt sure how to put them back on. Well after looking at it, I used a cresent wrench on a flat spot behind the tensioner pulley and pushed down until I could get the belt on. The pulley did not spring back like most car's tensioners. So I just pulled it back up until tight. I tested the A/C and it works just fine with no belt sqeal. Does this sound like the proper way to do this?
