I have to repair/replace the right side door mirror on an '06. The mirror glass and light lens are both broken, but the rest of the unit is fine. I have a recycled mirror, complete except for incorrect color. My first choice is to swap out the mirror glass and lens, if possible. Alternatively, I'll have to paint the replacement and swap out the entire unit. When the mirror is swung out against the spring tension, the mounting screws appear to be visible. They actually look like security screws so I'll have to invent a tool to remove them. How do I release the spring tension so the mirror will stay swung out of the way while I take out the screws? Once I get it off, will I be able to cannibalize the mirror and lens or must I paint and replace the whole thing?

you can press open with one hand/body, whilst unfastening the screws with
the other hand. or, get a friend to help. I was able to remove my mirrors
by myself. remove mirror shell first, then remove mirror assembly from door.

but you may not need to remove the mirror assembly from the door, if you're
only looking to replace the mirror cover and/or to swap out the mirror itself.

if....you're having to rewire for the LED array, then yeah....it possible that you
need to fiddle with the wiring connectors as they pass through into the door.

There's no "inventing" the tool.

It's a tamper-resistant Torx-Plus and you can get one from Mercedes.

If you have the Mercedes W211 Service DVD all required procedures are included, and the special tools required are listed by part number. From your dealer or at 800.for.merc

IIRC the cover can be removed without removing the internals from the door. Certainly the glass can be. Don't tear up the screws until you verify this.

Replacement prepainted mirror covers are available from Mercedes

You can reuse the mirror and turn sig led unit.
