Hi sorry i didnt get a chance to post an introduction first... but it's -27C here near Prince George, BC and I didnt think to see if I had a block heater before I bought this 1992 300SEL. If there is a block heater on it does anyone know where I might find it? Ive been looking all over the engine compartment of an unfamilure car in the dark with the only working flashlight i can find (tiny LED one that came on my keychain)... :confused:

PS if i dont find one ill just plug in this heating pad and put it on the side of the motor i guess =) I'm all ears...

-17f is pretty cold.

If it has one it should come out the pass side below the grill.

i looked all along both sides of the front grill and didnt find any block heater plug in. under the hood i see a row of circles just under the exaust manifold on the right side of the motor... im betting that's where a block heater would go, and there does not seem to be any cords coming out from that side of the engine other than the one from the alternator... darn... i put a small 1100 watt space heater under the hood and a heating pad on the left side of the motor to keep it warm tonight - it's supposed to drop down to -35C by the weekend... yuck... ill try to see if i can get a hoist at work tomorrow and glue an oil pan heater to the oil pan and perhaps another to the transmission.

I used one of those magnetic heaters for many winters on my old '75 450SE. I attached it to a piece of aluminum conduit so it would be easier to 'stick' it to the oil pan each evening, and remove in the AM. I also wrapped the battery with a 'battery blanket' heater, plugged into the same extension on a timer.
I recall looking into one of those in-line coolant heaters, that mount in the radiator hose, but could never get around the issue of having the interior heater 'on' as it had the auto climate control.
If you do decide to have a block heater installed, be super careful of the old freeze plug that will have to be removed to put it in...real easy to chip a piece of the block around the edge, and it'll never seal right.
