Does anyone know if a 1987 560SEC made for the German market satisfies United States EPA and DOT standards. I know the DOT is very stringent with regard to seemingly trivial differences,i.e. running lights, KM on the odometer, brake light on the instrument cluster, etc. From whom must a letter of compliance be obtained? MB in the U.S. or MB Germany? Thank you in advance for any replies.

No, that car would have to have DOT approved up-dates for you to get the car into compliance. Most of the 1986 & later cars will meet the EPA specs, UNTIL OBD2 specs in 1996.

Grey Market Cars
I've spent the last few months checing into importing laws. 25 year olds are the best option, but if you would like to check the status of your car, visit the NHTSA web site at http://www.nhtsa.dot.gov/cars/rules/import/
Your Car is listed as eligible for importation but does require modification to meet Safety and EPA standards. This site also give a list of authorized importers. Good Luck Chris |
