I have a 380 sel that had a strong fuel smell when I bought it. Turned out to be the hoses that connect the tank to the carbon canister and the canister to the intake manifold were badly deteriorated. Replacing them cured the problem. See the attached photo.

fuel smell....
when i purchased 1987 420sel i had the fuel lines under the car repaired...
are there fuel lines under the hood that i need to change and where are they? help would be appreciated lyle |
Find the injectors where they enter the engine, and follow the lines back as far as you can. The other place I can think of, is at the EHA - if that leaks, sometimes you get lucky, and just have to replace the o-rings.

Fuel Smell
Check the Gas Cap. I had the same problem, it appears that if the rubber gasket is old it does not seal, once the pressure builds up the gas smell comes in through the trunk and rear of the car. I found that going to any auto supply place and buying a $2.00 gas cap solved the problem.

why fuel smell?
why do i smell fuel all the way home when commuting 70 miles from work? nothing under the body meaning the fuel lines under the car are not leaking....
is there something that I am missing? please help.... lyle in austin |
first things first...
What kind of car...? I assume its a Benz, but.... |
if its a diesel, look first at return lines on injectors, gas and fuel injected - same thing plus add the injectors as well, carburated - check for leak at float chamber
|
Could be from the gas tank, depending on where it is. One of the fittings/hoses etc on the tank. I am not familiar with that car though.

well, not knowing what car you have... and not knowing crap about MB's or cars in general for that matter....
Check the EHA valve if it has one. I just replace my leaky EHA w/ another from parts car that leaked, apparently these are a common problem. Finally found a used one that didn't leak. Car really smelled like gas, but none dripped to the ground pull the air cleaner and start the car, it will be very apparent if its leaking |
