How much grease is supposed to be inside the front hub of a 83 380SL? I am replacing the brake hoses, disks, rebuilding the calipers and I noticed that the hubs are pretty well loaded with grease in the center area. Is that necessary? I removed the old grease, cleaned the bearings and now I need to know how much grease to pack the bearings and hub with. Thanks.

I'm not sure about your model, but some models are specifed to have 60 grams of grease in each hub, 45 in the bearing and 15 in the hub cap. I suspect the specification is in place to prevent overfilling, which can be a problem.

I don't measure grease. I make sure to pack the grease properly between the cage and rollers, generously butter all internal surfaces of the hub, and put a thick layer of grease on the sides of the bearings once they're in the hub. This should work fine. The tricky part is properly setting preload on the bearing. This will have the largest effect on bearing life.

Make sure to change the seal.

Very interesting,Ill wait and see if more replies give me a more definite answer to follow. I wasnt aware that the cap had to hold grease. I packed the bearings by hand after i soaked then in degreaser to remove the old grease. Thanks.

did you clean the bearings thoroughly before repacking, or just soak them?

the old grease needs to be totally removed. use high temp disc brake compatible grease.

you can get a 150 Gram tube from your local dealership.I am not positve on the amount per hub on your w107, but it is between 45-60 g / side. I do it like Kestas myself, making sure to put some in-between the bearings.
make sure to pack the cap full to the ring.

It's a total of 60 grams, 45 in the hub, including the bearings and 15 in the cap. I use synthetic grease which is available in a tube from MB. I use Mobil 1 red grease.
